Eck McCanless's name
is a nickname given to him by his father Al. Eck is named after Eck Roberts, a famous Texas swing fiddle player
that Al had admired. Eck's real name is Alexander Everts McCanless (but everybody knows him as Eck). Eck is the
youngest of the three McCanless sons, but the first to return to the family pottery business. After attending one
year at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Eck dropped out of college to find out what he really wanted
to do with his life. His father Al needed a turner at the time so he set out to teach Eck to turn. Eck quickly
showed a great knack for vase forms for the crystalline glaze that was quickly becoming very popular at Dover Pottery.
Eck was also helped out immensely by some of Seagrove's best turners hired on by Al working alongside him at the
shop. Today, after ten plus years of full time turning, and all biases aside, Eck is simply one of the finest turners
in the Seagrove area. His intuition and eye for flowing lines and voluptuous form are impeccable, and his ability
to manipulate some of the most challenging of forms with lightness and evenness are second to none. Eck spends
his non-working time with his wife Rhonda and their two sons (and the third generation of Dover potters?), Levon
and Jonas. Eck also loves to rock n' roll and plays drums, bass, and guitar in various groups.
