Milly McCanless,
founder of Dover Pottery, first became interested in ceramics while taking a course on the subject at North Carolina
State University. Although a design major, she had always had a love of craft. Knitting, weaving, quilting, dress
making, and more were ways she filled her idle time. The idea for opening her own pottery studio spawned from pottery
miniatures made for doll houses of all things. After getting her three sons off to elementary school, Milly started
attending Montgomery Community College's ceramics program, headed up by top notch pottery instructor Mike Feree.
Milly's idea was to make miniature china ware for the elaborate doll houses she was constructing at the time. These
small miniatures evolved into larger forms for her own house, and she quickly became enamored with painting her
pieces with designs she had admired from different ceramic traditions from all over the world. Influences such
as Italian maiolica, Persian lustre ware, Iznik tile, Delft design and more all made their way onto Milly's pieces.
Her growing love of pottery inspired and fueled her husband Al's interest (a practicing pharmacist at the time)
to quit his job, and build a shop to start selling their unique wares to the public. Today, Milly is owner of Dover
Pottery, and keeps track of bills and payroll. In her spare time she gets out into the shop occasionally to keep
her fingers in, and to encourage her two sons Will and Eck, who now manage and produce the work. She fills the
rest of her time with her hobbies, especially her new passion, gardening.
